Rick “Horioka” is a Calgary-based tattoo artist who began tattooing in 2001 and has since built a strong reputation for his dedication to traditional Japanese tattooing (Irezumi). With over two decades of experience, Rick focuses on creating large-scale, custom tattoo work rooted in the history, symbolism, and artistry of Japanese tattoo culture.
Rick is deeply committed to understanding the meanings and traditions behind Japanese tattoos, continuously studying the craft to ensure authenticity and respect for the art form. His work often includes bodysuits, sleeves, and large custom compositions designed with balance, flow, and storytelling in mind.
In 2020, Rick was honoured with an invitation to join the prestigious Kisaragi Horikoi tattoo family of Toyohashi, Japan. Studying under Master Kisaragi and alongside other members of the Horikoi lineage, further refining his skills and deepening his knowledge of traditional Japanese tattooing.
In 2021, Rick was awarded the honorary title “Horioka,” recognizing his dedication, skill, and commitment to the tradition.
